History

Established in 1986

Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley (Habitat-Roanoke) was established in 1986 during the ten-year anniversary of our parent organization, Habitat International. Our mission seeks to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope. We advance our mission principally through residential housing development for qualifying low-to-moderate (working class) residents seeing permanent homeownership as their solution to affordable housing. In our 38-years of service to the Roanoke Valley, Habitat-Roanoke has become one of the largest developers of affordable housing in the City of Roanoke. To date, we’ve completed 286 homes, providing the benefits of permanent homeownership to nearly 1,000 adults and over 350 children. Our housing development project consist of either major rehabilitation of blighted/abandoned properties or new residential housing construction on vacant lots.

One of the Best Developers of Affordable Housing in the City!

In 2023, Habitat-Roanoke sold and dedicated eight homes to Habitat homebuyer families. In 2024, we are committed to completing construction and selling an additional 12 homes. Most of our homebuyer families have children. In fact, Habitat-Roanoke’s latest cohort of homebuyers has five families with a total of 26 children! That’s a record number of children for us in one cohort. The increase in housing units we’re building demonstrates our commitment to growth as it is our mission to provide homeownership to as many qualified Habitat homebuyers as possible. Chris Chittum, Executive Director of Community Development and Placemaking for the City of Roanoke describes Habitat-Roanoke as, “One of the best developers of housing in the city.” Further stating that, “When we give Habitat money, we know they will perform.” That’s a ringing endorsement; one we believe capture our heart for families, for the residents of the neighborhoods and communities where we work, and for the City of Roanoke where most of our work is performed.
